David LaChapelle - Portrait of a Photographer

Widely regarded as one of the ten best working photographers in the world, LaChapelle is an innovator whose unique approach to image making has been compared to that of Salvador Dali and Frederico Fellini. He is known for documenting popular culture with surreal images of reconstructed reality - but are his escapist fantasies really innocent fun? Are the celebrity portraits, art? This program begins with a New York fashion shoot for Vogue featuring Grammy Award-winner Alicia Keyes, travels to Poitiers, France for another, followed by a Vanity Fair assignment with Elton John and the opening of a major exhibit of LaChapelle’s work at Vienna’s Kunsthaus Museum. And here, for the first time on television, is a collection of some of his most imaginative images and stories of how some were made. Following LaChapelle and his crew on a wild ride across striking locations creates a dynamic profile of a great photographer and a glimpse into his own
record of fashion, glamour and style of the past 30 years.
